An old sandpit, excavated prior to 1935, on which date it was purchased by the
council as an extension to Shoebury recreation ground. About 2 acres in
extent, it is well matured with tree and shrub lined banks, large reedbeds and extensive
areas of lilypads. An enjoyable day's sport may be had among picturesque surroundings.
Most of the swims are purpose built, some with wooden staging for mud free comfort.
There are toilets within the park, but no refreshment facilities.
There are four carp over 20lb. One a mirror in excess of 25lb and
the others are commons of a slightly less weight.
The rest of the carp stock is of excellent quality with an average weight of
about 12 - 13lb. with a good sprinkling of upper doubles. Despite the reasonably
high stock level for the size of the water, these fish are not easy to catch.
Float anglers may well find themselves hooking into small carp in the weight range
of ounces to a few pounds since they spawn well and a few always avoid the pike.
The water also holds a good head of tench, last seasons best was 7lb.9oz., crucian
to 2lb. and the usual run of roach, rudd & perch. There's always the
chance of the odd exotic since, being a local park, nearby residents have for
a long time used the water to rid themselves of unwanted pet fish.
Normal angling techniques should ensure good sport, but this is not a forgiving
water and presentation must be good. Fish light for the smaller species and feed
little and often with maggots or pinkies on the hook. Be prepared to try something
different, breadpunch, hemp and tares all take fish. Normal leger methods work
well for tench and carp using your favorite bait. Don't ignore the old standbys,
worms, cockles or breadflake could bring specimens that don't fall for boilies.
Pike respond to any acceptable method, small plugs worked sink and draw are
particularly effective.
Since there is no natural feed to the lake,
there is a great variation of water depths
between the winter and summer levels.
The figures shown here are an average mean
and can be about 12" less in summer and
12"-15" deeper in winter.
We would suggest that the bank side immediately
inside the entrance as approached from the car
park be left clear since this is the area
most used by visitors feeding the ducks.
Most of the swims, being purpose built will
accommodate more than one angler and it is
not normally possible to fish between swims
because of the bank side vegetation.
